How Can Employers Help Reduce Stress in the Workplace?

It’s no secret that life can be stressful. Whether it’s living through a pandemic, dealing with political issues, or worrying about global events, employees are feeling more stressed than ever. And when employees are stressed, it impacts their work. A survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2021 found that nearly 3 in 5 employees (59%) experienced negative impacts from work-related stress. This included a lack of interest, motivation, or energy, difficulty focusing, and a lack of effort at work.

Employee retention is critical to business success, so employers can’t afford to ignore their employees’ mental health. The APA survey also revealed that employees who feel tense or stressed during the workday are more than three times as likely to look for a new job compared to those who aren’t stressed (71% vs. 20%).

Here Are Some Tips For Employers To Help Reduce Employee Stress At Work:

Offer Flexible Hours

Giving employees control over their work hours can make them happier. Whether it’s avoiding traffic, fitting in a morning workout, or walking the dog before sunset, flexible hours are a big hit with employees.

Allow Telecommuting

If the job can be done remotely, let employees work from home. You can also try a hybrid approach where employees only need to come to the office two or three days a week. Cutting down on commute time and giving employees more time for personal stuff can really help reduce stress.

Support the Use of Paid Time Off

Taking time away from work to recharge is important. However, many employees feel their employer frowns upon using leave or might even penalize them for it. Managers should send a clear message that taking paid time off is encouraged and lead by example.

Encourage Employees to Take Care of Their Health

Make it easy for employees to stay healthy by offering telehealth options, onsite medical care, and wellness clinics. Fun activities like a healthy cooking demo can provide employees with useful tips and a break during the workday to unwind.

Provide Resources and Support

Offer educational resources on stress reduction strategies like daily exercise, keeping in touch with friends, and good sleep habits. Promote wellness webinars, encourage the use of the employee assistance program, and share tips on mental well-being.

Ask Employees What They Need

Every workplace is different with unique stressors. Ask your employees what they need through surveys or focus groups. Sometimes stress comes from red tape, conflicts with co-workers, or feeling underappreciated by management. Identifying the causes of stress and improving the circumstances can greatly impact employee well-being.

By taking these steps, employers can create a more supportive and less stressful work environment. Remember, happy and healthy employees are more productive and less likely to leave, which is good for everyone.

You’ll enjoy the peace of mind knowing your benefits and employees are in good hands.
